How to take care of a toddler's nails

Clipping the nails of a newborn proves nerve-wrecking for parents, while in case of toddlers it is not so. It does not take much time trimming the nails of a toddler though it requires some know-how and professionalism in doing so.

Some children are scared when a pair of scissors or clipper comes near their nails as they associate cut with being hurt. So you as a parent will have difficulty keeping his/her hand/foot steady while trimming your toddler’s nails. Trimming and caring for a toddler’s nail is done not only for its look, but also for the child’s health; long nails not only accumulate dirt and germs, but also carry with it the risk of scratches both for the child and others around him/her. Also long toe nails carry the risk of being ingrown and hurting.

Here are a few tips for a smooth mani-pedicure:

Set an example and lead the way by casually taking out the nail clipper and using it on yourself, your spouse or an agreeable sibling and let your child watch as you willingly do it. Done in the right attitude, your tiny tot will soon be ready to trim his/her nails. 

     It is best to understand that though short nails keep most dirt from getting stuck, they could also accumulate some gunk. Make sure you wash your toddler’s hands before bedtime; it is also necessary that you use a rounded wooden toothpick or a scrubbing brush that comes in cute colors and animal shapes to remove any stubborn dirt that is sticking to the nails.

It is best to use nail clippers that have blunt and rounded edges for trimming toddler’s nails; avoiding scissors or clipper with sharp points is desirable until the child is old enough to sit still.

Trim the nails of your toddler by pretending your toddler’s nails are a family of mother, father and kids; finish off each nail by singing a favorite song with a nail related twist and a big loud kiss. Your toddler will have a good time and will not be frightened or sad.

Give your toddler a nail trimming after a warm bath in the tub; warm water not only softens up nails, but also makes your toddler more    amenable to a trim. Avoid trimming your toddler’s nails when below water.  

It may be difficult to trim all nails of a toddler at one go; if your toddler dashes off before you’ve finished the first hand, try again later — or even the next day.
