How to Encourage Kids To Help Out During Vacations
It was just the other day that I saw a group of mothers that were worried about how they would occupy their children fruitfully during the vacations that were fast arriving. Most mothers felt it would be great if they could engage the kids on chores when at home. Engaging kids to help out would help remove a great burden off their shoulders as well as give them sufficient quality time to spend together. Also this would help children learn valuable lessons in accepting and carrying on responsibilities.
A few tips worth considering:
• It is wrong for parents to assume that it is difficult to convince children to take part in the household chores; assume a positive attitude and start off giving responsibility to children when they are still young. Vacations is the best time to start off; start by giving small children smaller responsibilities and increase the responsibility as the child grows up. Starting young on taking help from children is much easier than convincing an older child that never helped out.
• Doing chores and helping out not only helps children to put their time and effort to good use, but also helps children learn useful skills like cooking and laundering that would be very useful when they fly out of the nest to set up lives of their own. Involve your younger kids in small tasks like bringing vegetables from the refrigerator, putting the clothes in the washer and other miscellaneous things. Involve your older children in cutting vegetables, putting the clothes into the dryer and emptying the trash. Observing and helping you will soon make the children more independent and interdependent that are two very important traits that would benefit them in future life.

• It is best to encourage children to help during vacations; it would also act as an additional incentive to pay some pocket money to children that accomplish certain difficult tasks. Giving an allowance not only helps adults to initiate children into doing certain tasks, but also gives the children a sense of accomplishment on completion. The extra money would come handy for children that are accumulating money for certain big needs like getting a TV game, or an expensive concert ticket.
• Lastly vacation time is the best time for family time also; let your children help you with the tasks when they are younger, allot them bigger tasks as they are older, but work along with them. Do not give the wrong message that helping out during vacations or doing chores is a punishment; abstain from resting or reading a book while your kids slog doing work. Doing daily chores together as a family gives a feeling of family synergy to young and older children.
