How To Deal With The Death Of An Elderly Parent
It has never been easy to console someone on the death of one’s spouse, with it being all the more tough when one has to also deal with the grief of a deceased parent. Following a few tips can help you deal with your own grief and also help your surviving parent get over his/her grief.
A few tips to deal with grief of a parent’s demise:
• It is first significant to understand that each one experiences grief in a different way, with fathers getting emotional, but not being able to express their grief in a constructive way. Being patient and kind along with encouraging your father to speak out his grief would help him.
• Mothers, especially Indian mothers get far more emotional and may cry or weep at times; this is due to the traditions in this country. Time is the healer of all grief, with it taking a year or more to be healed. One of the best gifts you could give your mother well past the time others sent condolence messages and cards would be in being patient and understanding and sharing in the grief.
• Men, especially Indian men are very dependent on their spouses for all their little needs; they miss their spouse and may also neglect themselves. It is time that you take over and try to satisfy all the needs you can of your father that would help him recover from the loss of a spouse; it is however to be understood no one can replace a spouse.
• Sometimes grief may be delayed, especially when the deceased parent has suffered long due to some chronic illness that required constant attention and care. Initially the parent may be calm, but the grief may surface after a few weeks or even months; it is best to be prepared for such happenings.
• Next it is important to understand that you also need some time for your grief; you should not hesitate to take the help of your friends and family members by telling them what is in your mind. It would also help to join a support group of people going through the same grief. It is never wrong to once in a while blow steam about your surviving parent.
• Lastly adjustment after the death of an elderly parent is equally tough when you have to care for a surviving parent; do take care of your health routines like eating well, exercising and getting plenty of sleep. Also keep your doctor informed about the death, so that he/she could monitor your health. In addition you would also be faced with issues regarding your own aging and death; it is the death of an aged parent that reminds us of this reality of life.
