How To Care For Parakeets
Parakeets are lot of fun and entertainment, easy to maintain and could live for 10 to 14 years if properly cared for. You could keep your pet parakeets happy and healthy by following a few tips.
Tips to care for happy and healthy parakeets:
• Parakeets are very playful and love toys: Provide your parakeet a variety of toys from rings to swings to bells to beads and rotate them regularly. They also love toys that are flashy or make noise and those that can be easily moved with their beaks and legs; however avoid toys with small parts that could choke the pet bird.
• Your pet parakeet loves company: A lone parakeet loves your company; however it would be a good idea to get it a companion. It is however suggested that you keep them separate when young to make them learn how to bond with humans also. It would be best to have a mirror in the cage of a lonely parakeet.
• Parakeets love to chirp, sing and squawk along: They also love to sing along to music and to your own singing. When away it is good to play the radio on a medium volume to encourage the pet bird.
• Give the parakeet a variety of foods for nutrition: Giving your bird a variety of foods instead of just seeds helps; you can innovatively serve your pet bird foods from clip on treats to millet sprays to birdie biscuits to small pieces of fruits.
• Earn the trust of your pet parakeet with patiently: Parakeets are shy and slow at building trust; place your finger in front of your bird to encourage the bird to hop on to it. Next try to coax your pet bird by nudging your finger against its chest to win its trust.
• Avoid losing trust by grabbing your pet parakeet: Grabbing is terrifying to the pet bird and you would lose the trust of the pet bird. It would be a good idea to have a cage with a detachable top so you can let the bird out more easily than grabbing it through the cage door.

• Exercise your pet bird by letting it out periodically: This will enable the pet to fly and run around; make sure they are in rooms with hardwood or linoleum floors that are easy to clean up. Also the doors, windows and curtains should be closed to prevent the bird from hurting itself.
• Keep your parakeet healthy with a clean cage: This would be a good idea to clean it outside with a hose after removing the perches and toys. The perches should also be scrubbed free of droppings.
• Make sure you have perches of different diameter and material: You could get perches of tree branches, plastic perches with fat and thin spots as well as perches with a sandpaper finish that would satisfy the needs of your pet parakeet.
• The parakeet’s cage should be kept in a bird-safe area: Keep the cage in a place free from drafts from window or air conditioners and the kitchen that has cleaners and cooking fumes. It is also necessary to avoid keeping them on the refrigerator as vibrations may disturb them.
All these tips go to make your pet parakeet feel loved and cared for.
