How Does A Kennel Assistant Differ From A Kennel Attendant?
With various jobs attached to the business of looking after pets it is quite possible for one to get confused with the various jobs. Today I would be talking about the jobs done by kennel assistants and kennel attendants and how they differ from each other.
Both kennel assistants and attendants perform a number of services to animals; they take care of dogs, cats and other animals. Working both in veterinarian offices and animal shelters they perform a number of services at the owner’s request. No special training is required for both these jobs though with experience you will be able to handle a wide range of responsibilities.
A bird eye’s view of the various jobs done by kennel assistants would tell you that they work in animal shelters, rescue leagues and veterinarian offices and provide a range of services like feeding and walking the animals, cleaning them and their cages and monitoring their health. With experience they could also vaccinate or euthanize animals under a veterinarian’s supervision. In addition kennel assistants could also perform some administrative tasks like maintaining records, talking to pet owners about health care and screening people interested in adopting an animal.
Kennel attendants also perform a lot of similar jobs as kennel attendants; they feed bathe and exercise animals and may pay attention to how an animal reacts in various situations. They are also responsible for cleaning cages and other areas like dog walks where the animals spend a lot of their time Sometimes kennel attendants may groom animals and perform a range of administrative duties like responding to questions from pet owners and answering the phone.
Though both kennel assistants as well as kennel attendants both take care of animals; a kennel assistant plays a greater role in an animal’s overall health and health care. Both kennel assistants and attendants need a love and passion for animals to be successful in their duties. Most employers also require a kennel attendant to pass a background check and have some experience in general veterinary medicine.
Both kennel assistants and attendants need to meet the needs of the animals and their owners; they should be able to follow directions such as what and when to meet the animals. They also should be able to identify and resolve problems and work well individually and with others. Both should be able to kneel, crawl, bend, lift heavy supplies and keep up with the animals they exercise.
Both kennel assistant and kennel attendant are best jobs for those that love spending time with animals and caring for their well being. However kennel assistant have more hands-on experience of providing some basic health care and may at times also have to give the owner the news of the ill health of the animal.
