All About Pet Sitting Your Pet Bird
I am sure that all of us love our pet birds and would always want them to be comfortable, safe and secure. However there could be times when we go out of town on business or vacation and have to leave them in someone else’s care. Here are a few tips to make sure you and your pet bird/birds are comfortable when you are out of town.
You could arrange for your pet bird to be pet sit by a friend, family member, a co-worker or neighbor. In case you have to transfer your pet bird to their house make sure the house is bird safe, The pet bird/birds should be kept away from other pets and out of reach of small children. Ensure you the pay the person a small amount or trade pet sitting services; this makes it more a service rather than a favor. The best situation however would be for the person to pet sit an hour in the morning and /evening or house sit.
Another alternative is to engage a professional pet sitter that could be found from directories of professional pet sitting organizations like Pet Sitters International and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters. You could then make sure that the pet sitter is familiar with pet birds and is bonded and insured. Also they would be in a position to provide references.
Make sure that the pet sitter visits your house and spends some time with your pet bird before the time he/she actually pet sits for you. It is good to note if the pet sitter is comfortable with birds, is courteous and has a true interest in birds and passion for pet animals. It is also necessary that you give the pet sitter some information about the pet bird’s likes, dislikes, medical conditions, basis care and emergency contact numbers. Also ensure you take the pet sitter’s contact details.

The next step is to board your pet bird in a trustworthy place as an avian vet or an avian only store; ensure that the place or person you board your pet bird/birds is comfortable for them. In these circumstances it is best to make sure that your pet bird has a health check-up and prescribed vaccinations from an avian vet to ensure that your bird and other birds are not exposed to avian diseases.
Next it is important to give the name and description of the pet bird/birds and other instructions regarding feeding and changing of the water. It is also required that you inform the pet sitter about the likes, dislikes and any quirks in the personalities of the pet bird/birds. It would also help to give a long perch for step-ups and step-downs.
Lastly it is also important to give your contact details as well as contact details of an emergency contact person who could be a family member or close friend who is familiar with the pets. Also give your avian vet’s contact information as well as the amount that can be spent at the vet. As a last note tell the pet sitter an agreed upon time for you to contact him/her and let one know you’ve returned.
