All About Alternatives To Nursing Homes For Elders
Nursing homes are not the only option for those that are ill and struggling to maintain a home; you could also find other alternatives based on one’s individual needs. These alternatives are less costly than nursing homes and also help to improve the elder’s quality of life.
Alternatives to nursing homes for elders:

Community services are the solution for those elders that enjoy relatively good health, but need some assistance in order to continue living at home. Some of the community services include Meals-on-Wheels and homemaker and companion services. Companions provide companionship check in on the elders a few hours every week. The elder gets help in paying for the housing; some subsidized housing programs also offer elderly tenants services such as errand running and assistance with routine household tasks.
Adult Day Care Programs:
This is an option available to families to take care of the elder/elders during the day when the family caregivers are working and away. Providing more than just respite care, adult day care services offer social activities, nutritional counseling and other therapeutic programs. Another alternative is the hiring of a home health aide to care for an elderly family member during the hours when the family members are not available.
Home Health Services:
These services help elders who want to live in their own homes, but need additional medical care following hospitalization. The elders availing of these services must either have insurance to help cover the costs of these services or other assets that give funds to pay for these services. Home health services could include nursing care, the services of a home health aide and other medical therapies, with elders that are terminally ill qualifying for hospice care. It allows elders to receive palliative care at home rather than in a nursing home.

Assisted Living Communities:
Designed for elders that need assistance with the activities of daily living, the residents in these assisted living communities enjoy reasonably good health. They offer housing and meals and may offer other personal services as well as limited nursing services, transportation to and from medical appointments, and other related services. An assisted living community may operate independently or be part of a larger continuing care community.
Waiver Program:
Elders 60 years and above qualify for this program through the Area Agency on Aging. This program helps people who do not want to go to a nursing home but continue living at home to get services like meals delivered to the home, personal care, home modifications and installation of an emergency response system. They help an elder to continue living at home.
