7 Things to Know Before Volunteering At An Animal Shelter

The idea of animal shelters brings to mind those animals that have been discarded or suffered a raw deal in their life; however volunteering at an animal shelter could be a very rewarding experience with many benefits. It could also help shelters in getting labor to continue their endless service to animals.

Here are a few things you need to know before volunteering in a local animal shelter:

1) One of the important reasons it is best to volunteer in animal shelters is the lack of time commitment; you could volunteer during your free time and the shelter and they would e-mail you about the list of upcoming events that need volunteers.

2) You are generally required to complete a training program or class before you can work in an animal shelter. This training may be given individually or once a month; ensure that you ask your local shelter when the next training will be held and its duration.

3) Find out about the tasks involved in volunteering at the animal shelter; what you may end up doing can be far from what you imagine. You may be allergic to dogs or cats or may detest poop; you may be happy answering phone calls or passing out fliers. There are many tasks involved to keep the shelter running smoothly; once you find out the tasks available you can easily decide the tasks you prefer to tackle.

4) Think over of the weather conditions also; though the indoor areas are normally climate controlled the outdoor areas and runs are not and may have extreme cold and heat conditions. You should either be prepared to work with such conditions or request indoor work only.

5) The accident and injury policy of a shelter involves volunteering at your own risk. Some shelters may require you to sign a waiver that the shelter authorities will not be liable if you are injured or involved in an accident. If this is of major concern to you ensure that you know about it in advance and act.

6) It would be prudent and in your interest to sign up after knowing the types of animals that are housed or taken in a shelter. Some shelters may have only cats and dogs, while others may have birds like macaws, cockatiels, budgie and cockatoo, rodents and snakes. If you have an aversion to any type of animal, find out in advance the animal you have to assist in. Also some shelters have separate buildings for different animals; this would help you find an animal that is perfect for your preference.

7) It would be heartbreaking if you work in an animal shelter that takes animals you love for euthanasia; it is also sad when you work in a shelter and get attached to animals that are finally adopted, with the greatest consolation that they are going to a loving home. Also most normal shelter occurrences are seeing animals in pain, dealing with injuries, trying to recover from abuse or even being returned after being adopted.
