6 Effective Ways To Discipline Your Child
Most parents want their children to be disciplined because they believe their children should be civilized to live in society; there is no quick fix for disciplining children and there are many times when a kid repeatedly tests the parent’s patience. Here are a few tips that would help discipline our children in the most effective way.
6 effective disciplining tips:
1) It is first very important for parents to set rule and communicate them clearly to their children when the child is in a proper frame of mind to listen. Once the child understands what is expected of him/her, one would be in a better position to cooperate. Pediatricians are of the opinion that parents should practice discipline when it works best for them; interrupting a child in the middle of a game when the parent has time would help teach the child what is expected of him/her.
2) Punishment should not be the centerpiece of discipline; parents should not overlook a child’s good behavior. Parents need to offer positive reinforcement by rewarding a child’s good behavior that should be developed. Rewards could be according to the level of good behavior; cleaning one’s room could warrant praise, while something extra-ordinary warrants a bigger reward.
3) Make an attempt to neutralize arguments as they are no-win arguments. When a child is not in a good mood and accuses you with phrases like "This isn’t fair," or "All of my friends get to have this," simply say "I know." It is important to understand here that the lesser one speaks in such situations the more clearer the point becomes to the child.
4) It pays for parents to be consistent with rules and not break them even in the most challenging of circumstances. Not enforcing your own rules puts everything you say into question and confuses the children what to expect of parents as they never really know the rules. Parents need not feel guilty of setting rules that ruin the child’s fun; disciplinary rule keep children in their limits and also give a security that parents are watching over them. You could adopt a more flexible approach for older children though it is best for them to know that being careful and safe is important.
5) Discipline children the cool and calm way could be more easily said than done; it does definitely pay to buy yourself time to calm before dealing with certain situations. When your emotions are in check, express empathy for your child first, then deliver the consequences. Empathy gives your child room to connect his behavior to the outcome.
6) Lastly you need to be a role model for your children in what you want them to follow; most children imitate or copy the attitudes of their parents. So be polite, honest and truthful if you want your child to be so.
To conclude disciplining children is not very easy; you will have good days and bad ones, with success just lying in pushing a bit.
