5 Skills That A Babysitter Should Possess

Parenting is a very challenging job, more so when you have to make a decision of choosing a babysitter for your kid; the babysitter has not only to be trustworthy and dependable, but should also keep your child safe and secure when you are away. In addition to these qualities, babysitters have also to possess 5 important skills.

The 5 important skills a babysitter should possess:

1) A good babysitter should have excellent recommendations: As you network among your family, friends, co-workers and acquaintances you would come across many babysitters; it is best to go in for those with excellent recommendations as they would be experienced, knowledgeable and trustworthy.

 

2) A good and experienced babysitter has first aid certification and experience: It is very necessary for a good babysitter to have CPR certification or at least some knowledge and experience in first aid as accidents are quite common among children. An ideal babysitter should know how to clean and bandage cuts and scrapes; perform CPR, and Heimlich maneuver. In case of small children and infants a babysitter should be able to perform lifesaving techniques without injuring their small and delicate bodies. 

3) Babysitters should follow your rules: They should follow your rules regarding what the children can eat, their behavior and the time they go to bed; it would be a good idea to ask the babysitter’s reference if they are good at following home rules and if they are perceived to have issues with authority.

4) The babysitter should be mature: It does not matter how old the babysitter is, but he/she should be mature and responsible; it is best to engage a young babysitter that has experience with one’s younger sister and brothers than engage an older one that does not know how to change a diaper.   

5) The babysitter should bond with the family: While interviewing potential babysitters it is best to pick up babysitters who will reinforce your values and belief systems while you are gone. This is best for the family. This can be easily found out when the potential babysitter spends some time with the children. You should ensure that your children feel comfortable around their sitter, and that they are willing to communicate with her/him. Allowing your children to spend time with a potential sitter is especially important if you have an infant, since a baby's needs are more sensitive, and their schedules are more intense.
